Handy Tips to keep your carpets and rugs clean

Friday, May 28th, 2010

With all the holiday entertaining the last two months, it’s likely something was spilled on your carpet or dirt was tracked into your home. There are steps you can take to minimize damage and to increase the likelihood of your carpet looking like it did after it was last cleaned. As we’ve mentioned before, vacuuming often is the single most important thing a homeowner can do. It’s a good idea to have walk-off mats at all the doors leading from the outside of your home.

It’s vital to clean up spills immediately. The bottle of Spot Out we leave when we clean your carpets does a wonderful job on spots and it’s very safe for your rugs and carpets. Just pour a little of the product on the spot, rub it gently into the carpet with your finger tips and blot with a white rag. Repeat till the stain is gone.

Have your carpets cleaned professionally by us and remember, just because you can’t see a spill or dirt doesn’t mean they won’t cause problems in the future.

Carpet and Rug Cleaning Frequency

(Continued from last post)

When communicating with carpet mills regarding cleaning frequency, there is a distinction between what is required to comply with the carpet warranty and ideals of how often they would prefer carpet to be cleaned. A statement from Shaw Industries says this: “Our requirement is that carpet should be cleaned at least once every two years in order to maintain warranties. Ideally, a carpet should be cleaned every 12 to 18 months, depending on the family and home.” The Total Solution Carpet Care Guide from Beaulieu Commercial states that “… carpet must be proactively maintained before soiling becomes noticeable.”

The guide goes on to explain that carpet cleaning includes preventive maintenance through the use of walk-off mats, daily spot and spill clean-up, daily vacuuming and pile lifting. A vacuum beater bar serves as a pile lifter as well as removing loosely attached soil from carpet fiber. In some cases carpet rakes are used to give carpet maintenance an added benefit for easy vacuuming.

The guidelines stress the importance of soil containment, scheduled vacuuming along with spot and spill removal as key elements of a maintenance plan. The approach is summed up with this highlighted expression “If you don’t maintain it, you can’t expect it to stay clean.”

While vacuuming is the single most important element in Preventive Maintenance, vacuuming alone will not remove the residues that build up on carpets from spills, normal cooking oils (like vegetable oils), natural body oil due to walking barefoot or in socks or natural body oil from pets which all become soil attracting residue on carpet fiber.

Incorporating a Zero Residue carpet cleaning solution like we do, is the only way home owners can be sure their carpet is fully deep cleaned and the soil removed. The old method of Steam Cleaning, so called, has proven to be less than efficient in properly cleaning carpets and permanently removing stains. Spots should rarely return but if they do, a good professional carpet and rug cleaner should return, at no additional charge, to stand behind his cleaning reputation, as we at Blueagle do.

Carpet and Rug Cleaning Frequency

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

Periodically we are asked, “How often should I have my carpet and rugs cleaned?” To be honest there is no simple answer to this question and most often you, the home owner, are the only one who can answer this question. However, we do not believe home owners are comfortable with Carpet Cleaning Frequency becoming a guessing game. So hopefully, we can give you some guidelines to help in making a beneficial and fact-based decision for your home and family.

In 1993, Dr. Michael Berry, in his book Protecting the Built Environment: Cleaning for Health, said that the recommended cleaning frequency for  health purposes, in residential settings, should be as often as every three months if children and pets were exposed to health threats. Not all homes have health issues that factor into this decision, however.  Still, professionals were encouraged to read Dr. Berry’s statement as it publicly introduced carpet cleaning as a vital element in maintaining healthy residential environments.

In 2002 a residential cleaning frequency chart was developed by professional consensus that suggests a professional cleaning every 12 to 24 months when light to mild soiling conditions prevail.  These conditions vary based on the size of a family, the number and age of children and of pets. For soiling due to heavy foot traffic, large pets and occupants who smoke, cleaning more frequently is necessary for carpets longevity and luster. As you can see, special conditions are always in play and these conditions determine more or less cleaning frequency. These conclusions are more in line with our experience as well at Blueagle Carpet Cleaning Company.
